Jardim do Mar (“Garden of the Sea”) is one of the most magical little villages on the island with lush nature and stunning cliffs surrounded by the beautiful Atlantic ocean. One of the eight parishes of Calheta, Jardim do Mar is located on the South coast, 1hour away from the airport.
Historically an agricultural village, today it hosts a combination of locals, surfers, hikers, and nomads that enjoy the world-class surfing, beautiful landscapes, and magical energy that the place holds.
CoLiving @ Jardim do Mar
Nomadico is building a network of community-coliving spaces for nomads around the world. Teaming up with local businesses they create coliving spaces that are affordable, great to work from and with a strong community while supporting locals and keeping things sustainable.
Located on the west corner of Jardim do Mar, right in front of the ocean is Nomadico’s coliving space.
The space has in total 11 rooms with a combination of shared & private.
It has a dedicated workspace as well and many other spots to work from with some of the best views on the island. Believe it or not but this hidden gem has 5G fibre optic internet. There is also a community manager to get all the digital nomads together, create weekly events and facilitate knowledge sharing.
The house was founded by Cecilia and her family from Jardim do Mar and they are still around to share local insights, create a family vibe and organise weekly dinners.

Building a strong, inclusive community where you feel at home is incredibly powerful and important. Besides the family vibes already there in the house you will find a friendly community host to lead the weekly events and make sure everyone is connected. Weekly events include skill shares, dinners, outdoor adventures and more.
Jardim is a world famous surf break with multiple waves walking distance. Besides surfing there are beautiful walks and hikes at its doorstep, places to go swimming and many other adventures to be found. It’s a small and tight community with a few nice restaurants and bars so you will meet the locals quickly.
It’s recommended to have your own transport (or shared) on the island to be able to discover more. Nomadico’s community members often share means of transport too.
Hi! I’m Bill Rutten, the founder of nomadico.io. I’m originally from the Netherlands but I grew up in Spain from the age of 12. I learned early on that moving to a different country is fun and borders are overrated. Once I graduated at the age of 25 I left and I’ve been living a nomadic lifestyle since.
I’ve always loved building community and connecting with people. Traveling around the world, couchsurfing and hitchhiking taught me humans are in general pretty awesome and everyone has a unique story to tell. Through my passion for surfing and the outdoors I also developed a strong passion for sustainability. In Australia I started my own coworking startup – TwoSpace. I also recently worked at Selina as Global Head of Coworking.
Now, putting all of my past experiences together, I’m building Nomadico. A network of community coliving spaces for nomads. We support local business, embrace sustainable travel and above all, build a strong community to make it more fun and meaningful to travel the world as nomads.
Did you know?
1) Jardim do Mar is a favorite with surfers because it is considered that there are the best waves in Europe here. This place stages many international surfing competitions
2)This parish is situated on a forming fajã unknown and presumably prior to the discovery of the island. The beauty of the place, once covered with wildflowers, is at the origin of the name and is mirrored in other toponyms such as Sítio das Roseiras.
If you wish to stay in Jardim do Mar and have access to the community and learn more about this location, you just need to complete your registration at Digital Nomads Madeira Islands.
