Jardim do Mar (“Garden of the Sea”) is one of the most magical little villages on the island with lush nature and stunning cliffs surrounded by the beautiful Atlantic ocean. One of the eight parishes of Calheta, Jardim do Mar is located on the South coast, 1hour away from the airport.
Historically an agricultural village, today it hosts a combination of locals, surfers, hikers, and digital nomads that enjoy the world-class surfing, beautiful landscapes, and magical energy that the place holds.
On this page you’ll find more about the Nomadico Community, its coliving and house options, as well as events, either in Jardim do Mar and Paúl do Mar. Varying in size and price, all homes are one big community, with shared activities and a dedicated community manager.

It’s a small and tight community with a few nice restaurants and bars so you will meet the locals quickly.
Transport
It’s recommended to have your own transport (or shared) on the island to be able to discover more. Nomadico’s community members often share means of transport too.
Founder & 1st Nomadico
Community Manager
“Hi! I’m Bill Rutten, the founder of nomadico.io. I’m originally from the Netherlands but I grew up in Spain from the age of 12. I learned early on that moving to a different country is fun and borders are overrated. Once I graduated at the age of 25 I left and I’ve been living a nomadic lifestyle since.
I’ve always loved building community and connecting with people. Traveling around the world, couchsurfing and hitchhiking taught me humans are in general pretty awesome and everyone has a unique story to tell. Through my passion for surfing and the outdoors I also developed a strong passion for sustainability. In Australia I started my own coworking startup – TwoSpace. I also recently worked at Selina as Global Head of Coworking.
Now, putting all of my past experiences together, I’m building Nomadico. A network of community coliving spaces for nomads. We support local business, embrace sustainable travel and above all, build a strong community to make it more fun and meaningful to travel the world as nomads.”
Did you know?
1) Jardim do Mar is a favorite with surfers because it is considered that there are the best waves in Europe here. This place stages many international surfing competitions
2)This parish is situated on a forming fajã unknown and presumably prior to the discovery of the island. The beauty of the place, once covered with wildflowers, is at the origin of the name and is mirrored in other toponyms such as Sítio das Roseiras.
